KCIL (Kingston Centre for Independent Living - formerly KADP) is a local charity working proactively to empower and support people with disabilities. KCIl was established in 1968 and is a member-led organisation with a number of sub groups and committees which guide the work of the organisation.
What does KCIL do?
Independent Living Scheme - Using cash payments instead of direct services from the council, disabled people can benefit from having control and choice over who they employ as personal assistants, what tasks are carried out, how these tasks are completed and when they take place.
Information and Advice Service - Our officer maintains a library of disability related information, responds to enquiries and advises people on issues relevant to their needs.
Access - We are committed to increasing awareness and to ensuring the provision of improved access in the Royal Borough of Kingston. We work closely with the Council and other organisations, giving professional advice on planning applications.
Outreach and Consultation - Our Community Development Officer consults with service providers and users, trying to develop a code of ‘best practice’ and ‘inclusion for all’. Their role is also to raise the profile of KCIL, and in turn increase membership.
Grants - We administer grants to enable local disabled people to take a holiday; this fund is administered on behalf of the Council.
Volunteers - Volunteers are a major part of KCIL’s work and we highly value their contribution. We strive to match volunteers skills and interests with the tasks that need to be done. We offer basic training and expenses
Who controls KCIL?
KCIL is controlled and managed by an Executive Committee, 90% of whom are disabled people.
