This scheme improves the quality of life for older or physically disabled people by providing friendship and support. At present we do this through home visits. We plan to introduce a telephone - based service shortly.

This is a service to befriend older people and help them manage their financial affairs. The service is closely linked to Social Services within the county, from whom referrals are received.

Availability: by referral from the hospital
This scheme assists older people on discharge from hospital, helping them overcome the practical, social and emotional problems they face on returning home. It encourages successful rehabilitation and reduces the possibility of readmission.

We provide a support service for those disabled people eligible for Direct Payments. Clients receive money to purchase their own care services, rather than have the services arranged for them by Reading Borough Council.

This scheme helps to ensure that older people are aware of, and can claim, their entitlements to benefits. In addition to telephone advice, surgeries are held in Reading, West Berkshire, and Wokingham.

Four handymen cover the five schemes. They undertake minor household repairs for frail older people on limited incomes. Tasks include, for example, the installation of key safes and smoke alarms, telephone extensions, minor plumbing, and general maintenance.

We provide confidential information and advice on a wide range of subjects. We are committed to the Community Legal service Scheme, and have achieved the CLS Quality Mark at ‘General help with Casework’ level. Telephone advice is available on weekdays from 10 am – 4 pm..
