What are they?
Individual budgets are designed to help people take control of their social care budgets, manage their support and choose the services that suit them best.
They put the user at the centre of the planning process and recognise that they are the best person to understand their own needs.
The benefit of combining funding streams
Individual Budgets combine funding streams overseen by the Department of Health, Department for Work and Pensions and Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, and therefore people who use individual budgets will not have to repeatedly provide the same information to different agencies.
What are the benefits?
The budgets will combine support that helps people to stay in their own homes, adapt their homes to make life easier and other services, such as homecare currently provided by the council.
Who will they help?
Started in 2006, they are to benefit older people, people with physical disabilities or sensory impairment, people with learning difficulties and people with mental health needs
Who will help people plan with their budgets?
This will be done by the care managers from Social Services.
When will they come into effect?
Pilots of between 18 months and two years will be run by the following councils:
