MAKING THE ARTS ACCESSIBLE FOR DISABLED PEOPLE
The National Disability Arts Forum aims to create equality of opportunity for disabled people in all aspects of the arts.
it does this by
* supporting the development of Disability Arts Agencies, both regional and local, throughout the UK;
* maintaining and developing a network through which these Agencies can support and assist each others development;
* establishing favourable conditions within which disabled people can explore and express the condition of disability through the arts;
* promoting the value of art by disabled people.
as well as
* promoting and supporting examples of good and or innovative practice that encourages the participation of disabled people in the arts;
* assisting organisations in developing good and or innovative practice that encourages the participation of disabled people in the arts.
strategy
The members of the Forum believe that it should be disabled people themselves who determine where and with whom responsibility for decision making and advocacy on their behalf should lie.
Hence the organisation is accountable to, controlled and managed by disabled people.
Like other ‘self-led’ disability organisations in the UK, it is committed to promoting equal opportunities and prioritises the employment of disabled people, as well as operating an ethical fundraising programme to finance its projects.
It works to promote similar practices throughout the arts community and
supports other arts organisations with corresponding policies.
The Forum’s main strategy for delivering it mission is to support and work with others who’s work involves making their products or services more accessible or attractive to disabled people, those who are engaged in producing and promoting Disability Arts and those who provide specialist arts services to disabled people, such as workshops or exhibitions.
The Forum aims to undertake at least one major arts project a year that is targeted directly at disabled people. Usually these are “model” projects or projects that are designed to break new ground.
NDAF publishes a free weekly electronic newsletter called EtCetera. To subscribe, send an email to admin@ndaf.org.
The Forum’s latest project is Arts Access UK, a national online access database, at http://artsaccessuk.org
