This campaign has been running since 1997 and aims to remove the means test for the Disabled Facilities Grant. This is a grant for families who need to carry out essential adaptions to their houses and property for their disabled child. Means testing means that some families are denied the grant and are often told to pay towards making their home accessible. For a typical family this can mean paying £10,000 to £15,000 or more just because their child is disabled. Many families can't afford these amounts and may therefore be unable to provide safe and accessible housing for their disabled child.
The Government is actually reviewing this grant at the moment so a final push is needed in England to get this unfair and unjust test abolished now. It was abolished in Northern Ireland in February 2004 and will be abolished in Wales this autumn. What is the difference between parents in England and those who live in Northern Ireland and Wales?
