Shared Care Network is the national organisation representing family-based short break services for disabled children and young people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Shared Care Network is the umbrella organisation for short break services. It provides advice and information, runs training, produces good practice guides, conducts research, raises awareness, promotes good practice and campaigns for quality services for disabled children and their families. Short break services provide opportunities for disabled children to spend time away from their primary carers on a regular basis. This gives them the chance to gain independence and expand their social lives while their families get a break from caring. Most children who use thes service have learning difficulties but they may also have physical disabilities, complex healthcare needs, Autistic Spectrum Disorders or sensory impairment.
Short breaks can be anything from a few hours a week to a few days a month. They may take place in the child’s own home, the home of an approved carer or family, or in a community setting. Short breaks can include day, evening, weekend or overnight care, Saturday and after-school clubs, befriending and inclusive leisure activities.
