SIA was founded in 1974, since when it has grown into a national organisation offering expertise on living with spinal cord injury through a wide range of services for people paralysed through spinal cord injury. SIA is controlled and run by spinal cord injured people themselves to assist those with similar disabilities get back to an ordinary life following injury. SIA’s philosophy is to help people help themselves and to achieve this our services include:
Freephone Helpline accessible by E-mail, post and telephone (0800 980 0501). We can provide accurate and up to date information on subjects ranging from housing, education, aids and equipment, benefits, mobility and transport, sexuality etc.
Peer Support Service is available at all the Spinal Injuries Centres in this country. SIA has a Peer Support Officer and volunteers working within each centre to provide friendly support and information on living with spinal cord injury, and on SIA and its work.
Community Peer Support Service currently covers Wales and the North East of England. This Service aims to bridge the isolation that can occur when a newly SCI person lives the security of a Spinal Injuries Centre to return to live in the community.
Directory of Personal Injury Solicitors provided free of charge to all members giving a comprehensive choice of solicitors throughout the UK who specialise in personal injury claims for spinal cord injury.
SIA Website at www.spinal.co.uk is a hugely popular community website containing thousands of pages and useful links on spinal cord injury. Twice weekly Chat Room and interactive Messageboard ensure a lively exchange of news and views.
SIA Link Scheme enables you to contact the SIA members who may have been through similar difficulties to those you are currently facing. Members volunteer to talk in confidence about a specific topic or topics, including pregnancy, sexuality, pain relief, motoring, sports and much, much more.
Publications and Factsheets including our bi-monthly magazine FORWARD cover a wide range of subjects. Moving Forward 3 is our major guide to living with a spinal cord injury and further information on this publication is provided in this pack. Meanwhile our regular magazine gives up to date news, views and information on the latest issues and products, while our Factsheets cover a wide range of subjects including sexuality, welfare rights and personal care.
