Pass IT On was founded in 2002 to acquire donated IT equipment from the local community and adapt it to suit the needs of individuals with disabilities who live in the EH (Edinburgh) post code area.
Who is elligible?
Clients can be of any age and may have a range of disabilities including learning difficulties, some mental health problems, physical disabilities and/or acquired brain injuries.
Their eligibility stems from the fact that they find it difficult to access pubic domain IT (for example in libraries). This may be because they are house or bed bound, find public places intimidating, cannot access a standard PC, or would require a long time to use a standard computer. Clients can register online or ask us to send out a registration form.
Working with clients
We work with clients on a first-come first-served basis unless they are terminally ill, in which case they go to the top of the queue. This means there may be quite a long delay before we are able to start working with someone.
Tailor made equipment
We carry out our assessment in the place where the client wants to use their computer so we can take into account their environment when designing their system.
Clients receive their bespoke refurbished computer at cost price (often free). This usually includes the base unit (with DVD drive and CD writer), monitor, colour printer, standard mouse and keyboard, speakers and sometimes a scanner and/or desk.
As far as possible, free software which suits their needs is installed on the computer. If they require adaptations (eg voice operated software, or specialist hardware such as switches, keyguards or mouse alternatives) but cannot afford to pay for them, they can apply to our in-house means-tested Adaptation Fund.
After delivering the computer, we offer a follow up visit to iron out any teething problems and also provide clients with information about further sources of support.
The future
We are planning to start a fully accessible online forum for clients and others with disabilities to exchange hints and tips about accessibility and IT.
Volunteer Led
Pass IT On is predominantly volunteer-led. Currently we have 1 memeber of satff and 42 volunteers! We also offer work-experience to people with disabilities.
