Carers into Education Project Manager
National Extension College

The National Extension College has teamed up with the Princess Royal Trust for Carers for a second Carers' Project and successfully obtained funding from the Big Lottery so that
carers in the Eastern Region and the Midlands can access NEC courses at reduced rates. We can offer a range of courses including GCSEs, AS and A2s, vocational subjects such as book-keeping or childminding, along with creative writing, counselling and study skills.
NEC courses are through distance learning, with no requirement to attend classes, so you can study where and when you choose. Studies can be fitted around caring responsibilities and carers will have the support of a subject tutor and a personal mentor. In addition, NEC will work closely with your local Princess Trust Carers' Centre to support students. So don't dismiss that GCSE never completed, new language or fresh start. It might not be an impossibility after all.
Distance learning courses are ideal for all carers but for those in other parts of the country there may be a problem in finding sufficient funding to pay the full course fee.
Their local carers' centres may be able to help them access local sources of funding.
The National Extension College (NEC) is an educational trust providing open and distance learning courses and resources. Its Equal Access to Open Learning (EATOL) programme offers financial, mentor and tutor support to people with disabilities and/or caring responsibilities who are over 16, resident in England and receiving income related benefits. For information about the availability of places, or for general advice and information about courses and funding, please contact Priscilla Barlow on 01223 400386 or priscilla.barlow@nec.ac.uk.
